The Past (a poem by Norma Schmid)

Grandma reads from her book of poetry.

Grandma reads from her book of poetry.

The Past

Past, you are gone,
I have kissed you goodbye;
You put smiles on my lips
and tears in my eyes.

Trials you brought
and my burdens were hard
there were mountains to climb
and rivers to ford.

My sorrows were great,
but pleasure came too.
There was much work
and service you asked me to do.

Thanks to you, Past,
for you taught me to live,
and lessons of worth
you wanted to give.

Happiness comes not
from self-serving greed;
But from easing the pain
of someone in need.

My life would be empty,
I want you to know,
The experience you gave me
caused me to grow.
