Grandma has used a combination of canes and walker for some time now. For a long time it was either canes or walker (and sometimes she’d be a daredevil and use neither) but she’s been wanting both recently. She prefers the walker to get from point A to point B. The canes are useful for grabbing things that are out of reach and balancing as you stand.
Most days, though, the canes are wrestled out of her room and back and she never uses them. She wants them close but doesn’t always need them. I was starting to get concerned watching her try to navigate her canes and walker together through the house.
I was afraid that in constantly having to shift the canes out of the way (going through doorways, etc) she’d lose her balance. The other night I’d had enough. She nearly fell backwards because she dropped one of her canes and tried to pick it up.
“Grandma, it would be a terrible thing if you fell because you were reaching for your canes”
“I knoooooooooww….”
The next day I found this old poster tube. I fixed it to her walker using gaff tape. Tonight I covered the rest of the tube in gaff tape to make it more durable and give it a more uniform appearance. Now, she’s always got both canes with her. She’s not constantly struggling with them and she can concentrate on simply going slowly and not falling.
This isn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever made, but it’s made a world of difference in her ability to move through the house.
Hooray for simple fixes!
Grandma looks like she’s going golfing.
A million dollar idea! You should pursue this invention and market it for the elderly, seriously.
