Beauty Skinned Deep (a poem by Norma Schmid)

Grandma reads from her book of poetry.

Grandma reads from her book of poetry.

Beauty Skinned Deep

The clothes are in tatters
The hair is in tags,
The mouth is all toothless,
Beneath the eyes are two bags

Oh, that leathery skin
And those lusterless eyes;
“A horrible creature!”
I think with surprise.

The joints all stick out,
And the curves curve in;
The body is all bones,
The bones are too thin.

Oh it is frightening,
This thing that I see.
I look in the mirror,
The reflection is me!
